How can we use technology to help people feel more connected to their work teams?

I recently read that 60% of employees feel less connected to their work teams since they started working remotely.

I know several people who have never attended work in person, and even their job interviews were 100% remote—this was unimaginable before! In fact, since COVID-19, we have had to change some paradigms regarding telework, as Jared Spataro, Director of Microsoft 365, says: “We need to stop thinking about work as a place and start thinking about how to maintain culture, connect employees, and harness human ingenuity in a hybrid world”

Given these changes, there is a need to seek solutions that integrate company employees with their work teams and also support individual well-being.

Those of us who have worked remotely know that sometimes, at noon, we are having lunch with our computer in front of us; schedules become less strict, and there are days when we devote more hours to our work activities in a way that, without realizing it, throws off our social, family, or personal activities, neglecting our well-being. To address this new challenge, there is a solution that can significantly help us improve this balance; however, in many cases, we have it within reach and do not know it. This solution is an entire platform called Microsoft Viva.

Some Microsoft 365 users have received emails with the subject “Your daily briefing”, in which Outlook “knows” the activities we need to complete and tells us which tasks are still pending. This is thanks to Microsoft Viva, which summarizes documents, emails, and meetings so that Microsoft 365 users can find what is most important for the next day. This is impressive; this small reminder has helped me send proposals on time that I might have forgotten, attend meetings punctually, and remember simple things like writing this Blog and other activities I planned throughout my week.

What is Microsoft Viva?

It is an employee experience platform that brings together communications, knowledge, learning, resources, and workflow insights, using AI (Artificial Intelligence).

This platform is divided into:

Viva Learning

It is a complete training center, combining learning with workflow, which enables a culture of growth and development for the organization’s employees.

Viva Insights

Viva helps people and businesses thrive with recommendations to improve productivity and well-being. It shows graphs of time spent on different activities, time worked outside working hours, and other data that help us pursue a personal and work-life balance.

Viva Topics

It automatically organizes content and experience across the organization to make information easier to find, acting as a Wikipedia within the organization and serving as a very important tool. Currently, employees invest up to 7 weeks a year searching for or recreating information.

Viva Connections

It brings together news of interest, conversations, and resources in the applications and devices you use every day. Viva Connections is included in all Microsoft 365 plans with SharePoint Online.

In summary, we are at a point of no return, where the flexibility of new ways of working will be fundamental; therefore, we must provide employees with tools that enable them to find a balance between their connection to work and their personal lives. We are in an era in which the technology we use must be more human, supporting our well-being while maintaining productivity in our organizations.
